SEK-Alborán, solidarity all year round

SEK International School Alborán finished the month of December, and with it the year 2018, participating in a dozen charitable causes.

Throughout the year in the school takes part and organises a wide variety of charitable initiatives for a range of different causes, culminating in the month of December.

Fundraising

Some of the projects have enabled us to raise funds for major charitable causes and NGOs, such as was the case of our traditional Christmas Festival. This festival features a gala prepared by students and teachers in which they have raised €3,000 that have gone to the Red Cross in El Ejido.

Other initiatives such as the Book Fair organised by secondary students and the school library, the Christmas Jumper Day organised by the SEK-Alborán Press Club, or the various initiatives framed within the SEK for Siyakula project , have managed to raise around €3,000 euros more that have gone to the Dyslexia Axdial Almería association, Save the Children and the Siyakula school in South Africa, respectively.

On the other hand, it should be noted that solidarity is also measured in kilos such as the 2,300 kilos of food donated by the entire educational community in favour of Comedor Pro Social, or those of the toys collected in the campaign in favour of Red Cross so that no child would be left without a gift during Christmas.

Donating their time

Another yardstick to measure solidarity has to do with time and love. And of both things have been in great supply from SEK students, not just in the projects mentioned above.

Thus, it is worth highlighting initiatives such as “Me acordé de ti” in which primary students have designed and written Christmas cards given to children hospitalized in Torrecárdenas. Also, Baccalaureate students did their bit as volunteers for the Argar association nativity scene and the choir at the Santa Teresa de Jornet nursing home.

Philosophy. Integral training in values

SEK-Alborán works with the International Baccalaureate methodology, which promotes the development of community initiatives as part of students’ education. Which is why, according to its Principal, Luis Carlos Jiménez, “the goal is not to create the best students in the world but the best ones for the world “. Initiatives such as those that SEK-Alborán carries out throughout the year are proof that it is being achieved.
